Students to compete in Construction Trade competition at local training center

Midland, Michigan, November 2015– Greater Michigan Construction Academy (GMCA) will be holding its 2015/16 local craft competition on Friday, December 11th.

Competitors will complete a one hour written exam and a three hour project performance test. The competitors are judged in areas critical to the success of any construction trade project: safety, quality of workmanship; layout of project, use of materials, assembly of components, sequence of project, ability to follow instructions, ability to complete in a timely manner, and accuracy.

Eleven (11) students from GMCA will be competing in 5 different trade areas.

“We are proud to hold this competition again this year and show our supporters and the community how well we do what we do.” Said, Stephanie Davis, Director of Education, Greater Michigan Construction Academy.

The Craft Championship Competition is sponsored by ABC Greater Michigan and its membership. Competitors are selected from the students of the Greater Michigan Construction Academy based on qualifying competition scores. The top qualifiers in each area are invited to compete nationally. Students that qualify for the ABC National Competition will join the nearly 1,500 men and women who have competed in one of the construction industries most recognized and respected craft skills events. ABC Greater Michigan is proud to have produced 20 national medal winners within the last 15 years.

A NEW addition to this year’s Craft Championship Competition will be the addition of a Cooking for Champions event beginning at 4:00pm on December 11th. Local individuals and companies will be cooking up their favorite dish for a chance to win Best Dish! The cost to sample the dishes is $10 per person and “tips” collected at each table will determine the winner. 100% of the proceeds from the cooking event will help offset costs of sending competitors to the National Competition.

The hands-on competition portion of the Craft Championship event will begin around 3:30 pm and be completed by 6:30pm. If you or someone you know is interested in pursuing a career in the skilled trades this is a wonderful way to get an idea of what opportunities are available. Please join us!
